New schools for the inner west
A raft of new school infrastructure projects are set to affect the inner west catchment zones — and possibly the price of your house.
Late last year we posted on this blog about how the school catchment area can impact the value and desirability of your home. The response was swift and vocal, with many pointing out the need for more options in our area, where schools are bursting at the seams.
The latest school up for a serious makeover is Darlington Public on Golden Grove Street, where plans have moved on to the design stage. Architecture firm Gardner Wetherill Associates has been appointed to work on the concept design and consultation with staff, students, parents and the local community has begun in earnest.
The new school will cater for 510 students. Planned in is a new hall, canteen and library, as well as ‘innovative learning spaces’ that allow technology-rich teaching to prepare students to thrive in our interconnected world. With a design based on a ‘going green’ vision, there’ll also be an emphasis on natural light and ventilation. Outdoors will be an extended play space with vegetable gardens, sports courts, quiet areas and a covered outdoor learning area (COLA).
Preliminary works will begin mid to late 2019, once the concept design has been finalised, and subject to planning approvals.
Darlington Primary is not the only new school on the block.
Work is scheduled to start imminently at Alexandria Park Community School. Students are currently being educated in two ‘pop-up’ schools on site while the main building is redeveloped to cater for 1,000 primary school students and 1,200 secondary school students. The project is aiming for an early 2022 completion.
And in Green Square, set to be the country’s most densely populated community by 2030, a brand new primary school for 600 children is in the early planning phase. The school will be built on the site of the former South Sydney hospital on Joynton Avenue in Zetland.

With winter in full swing, it’s a great time to consider listing your property. Can I chop down that tree?
Here in the inner west, we love our trees. Until they’re blocking your view, cutting out your light or preventing you from extending your house, that is. So, is cutting them down always a no-no? There may not be much in the way of water views around here, but there are still legitimate reasons why […]
